Friends, messages and status notes
Updated October 18, 2026
Shiro isn't only about AI characters: you can also connect with other people who make and enjoy them. Friends can see characters you share with them, send you messages and see your status notes. This guide covers how it all works and the tools that keep it safe.
Profiles
Every account has a public profile with a display name, a username, a bio, a profile picture and the characters you've chosen to share publicly. You can edit yours in Settings. Your chats with characters are never shown on your profile.
Adding friends
Open someone's profile, from a character they made or a comment they left, and send a friend request. When they accept, you're friends. You'll see pending requests in the app, and you can accept or decline them.
Being friends means you can:
- See characters they've shared with friends, or with you specifically.
- Send each other direct messages.
- See each other's status notes.
Direct messages
Direct messages are for talking with real people: sharing a character you love, swapping story ideas or just chatting. You can turn on notifications for new messages in Settings.
Because messages go to real people, they're held to a stricter standard than stories with AI characters. Messages are checked automatically, including patterns across a conversation, and messages that break the rules aren't delivered.
Status notes
A status note is a short line your friends see at the top of the app, like "writing a new villain tonight" or "taking requests for character ideas". It's an easy way to share what you're up to. Status notes are checked like messages.
Staying safe
- Block anyone you don't want to hear from. Blocked people can't message you or see your profile.
- Report a user, a message or a comment if it breaks the community guidelines. Our team reviews every report.
- Keep personal details private. Don't share your address, phone number, school or passwords with people you meet online, and be wary of anyone who asks.
- Trust your instincts. If a conversation makes you uncomfortable, you can stop replying, block and report at any time.
Sharing characters with friends
When you create or edit a character, you can make it visible to all your friends or to friends you choose, without making it public. It's a nice way to share characters made for an in-joke, a shared story or a group project. See sharing your characters.
Comments
You can comment on characters' profiles to tell their creators what you enjoyed. Comments are public and checked against the guidelines. Keep them kind; creators read them.
