Steering, fixing and rewinding a story
Updated October 18, 2026
Even great stories go off track sometimes: a character misreads the mood, a scene drags, or a reply contradicts something from earlier. Shiro gives you several tools to steer a story without starting over. This guide explains each one and when to use it.
Steer from inside the story
The gentlest way to change direction is to do it in the story itself. You're a co-author, and characters follow your lead. If a scene is stuck:
- Change the situation. A knock at the door, a sudden storm, a phone call, a new character arriving.
- Make a decision. Characters often wait for you. "*grabs the map* "We're going tonight."" moves things forward.
- Skip time. "*Three days later, at the edge of the desert…*" jumps past the slow parts.
- Reveal something. A secret, a letter, a memory. New information gives the character something new to react to.
Regenerate a reply
If the latest reply misses the mark, tap regenerate to get a different version of it. The story so far stays the same; only the last reply is rewritten. This is the quickest fix for a reply that's out of character, too long, or takes the story somewhere you didn't want to go.
With shiro+, regenerated versions are kept, so you can swipe between them and pick the one you like best instead of losing earlier versions.
Edit your own message
Sometimes the reply is fine and your message was the problem: a typo, an unclear action, or a line you'd like to take back. Press and hold your message and choose Edit. The story carries on from the new text. Editing is often better than arguing with the character inside the story, which tends to pull the whole conversation off track.
Continue without replying
If you'd like the character to keep going (finish a story they were telling, react further, or take the next step) leave your message box empty and tap Continue. They'll write another message without you replying. This is great for letting a scene play out or giving a character a moment.
Rewind to an earlier point
With shiro+, you can rewind a chat: press and hold a character's message and choose to rewind to it. Everything after that message is removed, and the story continues from there. It's the best tool when a story went wrong several messages ago and small fixes won't save it. The story summary is updated to match, so the character doesn't remember the part you removed.
Pin what must stay true
If a character keeps forgetting or changing an important fact, pin it. Press and hold any message and choose Pin as memory, or write a pinned memory yourself. Pinned memories stay in view for every reply. Read how memory works for how this fits with recent messages and story summaries.
Change the style, not the character
If the content is right but the tone is wrong (too gentle for a tense scene, too stiff for a cozy one) switch the chat style. Styles change how replies are written without changing who the character is, and each chat remembers its own style.
Adjust the character itself
If a character you created keeps behaving in a way you don't want, the fix belongs in their personality, not in each chat. Add a clear sentence describing the behavior you want ("She never gives up information for free", "He keeps replies short") and future replies will follow it. If it's someone else's character, you can still steer them in your own chat with the tools above.
Start fresh
Sometimes the best move is a new beginning. Starting a new chat with the same character begins a new story with a fresh memory. Your old chat is replaced, so only do this when you're ready to let it go.
When a character changes the subject
If a message goes against the community guidelines, the character steers the story elsewhere instead of answering it. That's on purpose, not a bug. Rephrase, or take the story in a different direction.
Which tool when
- Last reply is off: regenerate (and swipe, with shiro+).
- Your message was unclear: edit it.
- You want more from the character: Continue.
- The story went wrong a while ago: rewind (shiro+).
- A fact keeps getting lost: pin it.
- The tone is off: change the chat style.
- The scene is stuck: change something in the story.
